China Mission trip
Team Members: Kristen Levitt – Leader, Haley Robb, Luke Kendall, Brittani Dremann, Kelly Schaedel

What a great experience our group had teaching English in Southern China! Our team was made up of 5 young Americans, senior high and college age. We spent a week working with a local church teaching English to local students ranging from five to 35 years old. Our group co-taught the classes with member of the local church. To involve as many students as possible, we held morning and night class sessions. Total we had about 300 students attend all week!

One purpose of this trip was to help connect students in the area to a local church. By attending the English classes, the students not only improved their language skills, but also met other students in the area, and met members of the local church. Hopefully these new connections will interest them in attending their local church and help them feel comfortable there.

To accommodate the students’ different language levels, we split into five classes. Because our American team was small, we each had to co-teach a different class. In the upper level classes we were able to teach on a conversation level and more deeply engage with the students. At the end of the week, we each taught a lesson on American culture and allowed a time of Q&A with the students. It was interesting to hear their thoughts, questions, and impressions of American culture.

We were also able to have some free time activities with the students and share about our personal lives. Our team had several opportunities to get to know the students on a deeper level. The students seemed to really enjoy interacting with us. It was our hope that they experienced Christ’s love through our actions.

At the end of the week, the church hosted a youth event for the students. It was a time of games, connecting, and sharing. During the event, several of the local church members told their testimony. We found out that six students prayed to receive Christ that evening. The following Sunday, many of the students attended the church worship services.

Overall the trip was success. We feel like Christ used our team to help bring students into a local church, share our lives with them, and raise their interest in Christianity. We received positive feedback from the students and local teachers. The trip was also a great way for young American students to get involved with missions work and see what God is doing in China. We have the opportunity to do a trip like this again next summer.
